Rotation 2 - Oncology 12 SW
For my second rotation in the program, I began working on 12SW, the Oncology floor. It really wasn't that different from the Nephrology floor I'd been working on previously, except that there wasn't such an emphasis on monitoring fluid input/output and catheterization. The patients on 12SW also seem more independent and tend to have greater functionality than before. One thing I found interesting was that despite being called the Oncology unit, I don't think many people would be able to guess that if they weren't told. While many of the patients have been diagnosed with cancer, they don't display their cancer in the ways that we've come to expect. Physically, they appear no different than any other general patient in the hospital, and there aren't any special environmental alterations that scream cancer (save for this one time that a patient was in radiation isolation: the entire room was covered in plastic and no one was allowed in or out of the room).
Here are some of my experiences on the floor in more detail.
