Honors Calculus I: MATH 124
First quarter in calculus of functions of a single variable. Emphasizes differential calculus. Emphasizes applications and problem solving using the tools of calculus.
To be completely honest, I was very, very scared to take Calculus at UW. I was taking it two years after I had taken it in high school and I couldn't remember what a derivative was. That along with the fact that it was an Honors class instilled me a with a sense of hopelessness and despair.
However, I was pleased to find that the math came back fairly easily, and that through something short of a miracle, I was actually pretty good at it too. I was having a better time with math than I ever had before, and all the credit has to go to Professor Andrew Loveless. The long and short of it is that he really knows his stuff, he really cares about his students, and my grades throughout the entire series is a clear reflection of his passion for his subject matter and his students.
Below are the two Write Up problems he had us do, something that the regular Math 124 classes didn't have to do. They weren't easy, but they really helped me apply the concepts and get a better understanding of what we were learning (this was especially important in Math 126 when it mostly just applying formulas). While I'm sure I could have 4.0'd the regular class, I'm actually happier with the 3.8 I received in this class because it was a more challenging experience and ultimately more rewarding.

And since I went to the trouble of meticulously taking a picture of every single page of all my write ups, here is Write Up 2, where I unfortunately did not fare much better. My "failures" on these two Write Ups led me to finally shrug away my pride and ask for help from our excellent TA Kaloyan Marinov, and you'll see that my scores in Winter 2013 are much better.
