HONORS 100
HONORS 100 brings first quarter Interdisciplinary Honors students together for a common experience in order to introduce the value of interdisciplinary education and the importance of the integration of knowledge, as well as to help you form connections with your peers and other members of the Honors community. This course is also an introduction to the Honors core curriculum and requirements, with the goal of helping students imagine moving your work beyond the classroom into areas such as research, leadership, community and, ultimately, both local and global engagement.
Of all the assignments we did in Honors 100, this one is my favorite because it really exemplifies one of the most brilliant aspects of Honors: that we are all part of this special little community. I mean, it's nice to be able to say that I'm part of the UW community, but it really does not mean a whole lot when the sheer size of it is taken into consideration; it's hard not to feel like a rain drop in the midst of an ocean. So this assignment was a nice acknowledgement of the fact that Honors gives me the privilege of working with a small group of individuals that I know I can turn to for help. It gives me a sense of security because at the end of the day, it's always a comfort to know you have a friend somewhere to turn to. |

This was without a doubt the greatest takeaway from Honors 100. I'm the kind of person who likes to have everything organized and laid out before him, which is really important when you're trying to do Pre-Med and have to take a certain set of courses before MCATs and applications. But you can't forget that you have to actually major in something, and when it's not a science major, that just adds another degree of complication. If I didn't have this four year plan, I think I would have gone insane on a quarterly basis trying to figure out where my life was supposed to go. It was so comforting to be able to pull up this framework before each registration period and be able to say "Ah yes, I know exactly what I need to do." I deviated from the plan somewhat (SPAN 201? HA.), but it's fascinating to look back now and see just how much I stuck with it. |
