Rotation 5 - Pediatrics
Having entered college knowing without a doubt that I was going to be a Pediatrician, it's ironic that by the time I actually stepped onto the Pediatric floor at Swedish I was completely unsure what field of medicine I wanted to enter. The past year had exposed me to adult and geriatric populations exclusively, and in that time I had come to appreciate their qualities. The medicine involved was tinged with morbidity, but that wasn't nearly as depressing as I thought it would be. In addition, I had come across so many cool specialties that seemed to fit my personality and lifestyle desires that Pediatrics had slipped to the back of my mind.
However, when this department opened up for the first time for our program, I couldn't pass up the chance to learn more about this field. And naturally, I found myself falling in love with Pediatrics again. The patient population is so fun to work with and the nursing staff's unbounded optimism is a joy to be around. Although I've enjoyed my time on every floor I've shifted on, Pediatrics is one place where I feel at home and constantly happy to be.
