The Empire Strikes Back.
In cinema, Part II's have traditionally been where - if you'll allow a colorful colloquialism - "s**t goes down". The stakes are raised as no one is safe, the bad guys appear to have won, and all hope seems to be lost. It only seems fitting then that in light of the romantic notions surrounding our hero's journey, his own Part II would follow suit. The epic spectacle of his adventure expands, but so too does the darkness. There will be villains and confrontations and despair! Will he be able to weather the storm? How broken will he be by the time the credits roll? No spoilers, so read on!
As the picture below shows, the summer after my furiously fast-paced first year at UW was exactly as refreshing as I needed it to be. And so I came back in the Fall totally ready to go, determined to make the year absolutely amazing. Of course, by the end of my first day, I was already going through an existential crisis. I came out of my first O-Chem class not knowing anything that was going on, and I realized that I hadn't gotten a research position yet and I probably was going to be left doing nothing but twiddling my thumbs.
Panic, panic, panic (that calming Hawaiian breeze in the picture below was woefully far away from Seattle).
But after a dutiful scouring of the Undergraduate Research Database, I struck the jackpot big time with an internship through SORCE; as for O-Chem, my confusion only lasted that one day, and I sailed through the rest of the quarter with confidence. It all turned out well in the end, and I couldn't have asked for a better return to UW.
